The reason why I haven't just gone with the ESP32 yet is the price difference, for the ESP8266 it's $2 a board and for the ESP32 $4. The extra speed that the ESP32 brings would be useful, and it would be simpler for the user to complete the initial set up using Bluetooth. I understand it can be done by using it's IP address and there have been consumer products made using the ESP8266. With the ESP8266 it might get too complicated with inputting the WiFi credentials OTA. However due to multitasking involved in updating the WiFi stack, most of the applications use. I need a microcontroller that can connect to WiFi, it should be able to read images from storage fast to be displayed on the LCD, it needs to be able to go into deep sleep for battery optimization. The predecessor of ESP32, the ESP8266 has a builtin processor. The device only needs WiFi, Bluetooth isn't necessary but would be useful. It will be powered using a small battery. It will have a smaller LCD that displays information but isn't always active. It will be reading sensor data and sending it over WiFi to an mobile application.
